Man among many

See this man suffer,
a man among many.
Look at the women.
They tend the remains.
This is their mourning,
the wailing, lamenting
the dead and the dying,
the trapped who remain.

Here comes the PM
elected by many.
Angered by protests,
the batons strike out.
Watch his adviser
kick at a man fallen,
kicking in anger,
a man who’s held down.

Out comes the tear gas.
Out come the batons.
Out come the hoses.
Out come the guards.
No-one can stop the mines
grinding, grinding,
grinding down
coal like teeth grinding
down bones.
