Whale song

The whale song of the newly-weds is sung

where muffled creaking tore the plasterboards

now rings eternal baby’s racking cries.

The singers were once penitents of lust

chained to the body and the endless O

now skin near crinkles with the dried milk flakes

And Jonah is escaped and thanks his stars

who press him close to chest his easing pain,

two strangers with a whole new song to sing.
